MOHs SURGERY

Mohs Surgery is for difficult, recurrent or facial skin cancers

Dr Gilmour specialises  in skin cancer treatment using Mohs micrographic surgery performed at The Skin Hospital Darlinghurst. Mohs  micrographic surgery  is a way to treat  non-melanoma skin cancers. Basal Cell Cancers (BCC’s) or Squamous Cell Cancers (SCC’s) are the most common skin cancers treated. Only a minority of skin cancers require this treatment. The skin cancer is narrowly removed under local anaesthetic. The Dermatologist then looks at the removed skin under the microscope to see if all the cancer has been removed . If there is still cancer remaining, another piece is taken. This is continued until no cancer is seen. This allows for removal of all the cancer and minimises the amount of normal skin removed. After the skin cancer is removed the resulting wound is then closed with stitches with either bringing adjacent skin together or occasionally  a skin graft. Dr Gilmour or a Plastic Surgeon closes the wound.

The benefit of Mohs micrographic surgery is that you know the results straight away rather than in a weeks' time. Normal skin is conserved but also making sure all of the cancer is removed. It is more expensive than standard surgery in our rooms but includes the pathology testing and is done in a Day Surgery where you can use your private health fund. If you are not in a private health fund it can be quite expensive.
