Private practices have a lot of running costs. Things like rent, staff wages, computers, insurances, equipment, fitout costs, consumable products, phone , internet and electricity to name a few. Medicare rebates have not significantly risen for 20-30 years. They often only go up by a dollar a year or less and for many years recently they were frozen. As a result for us to remain viable and cover these costs we have to charge a gap which has slowly gone up over the years because the government essentially doesn't want to pay more money.
While we try to run to time this sometimes doesn't happen and we apologise. We don't actually know what each patient is seeing us for usually and so actual times to deal with their issues can vary widely. We also try to do minor procedures at the time to save people the time and cost of coming back, this can lead to time blowouts as well sometimes. It is stressful for everyone when we run late, but it does happen. We do try our best.
While we can do minor procedures and interventions on the spot, generally if you need an excision, or multiple procedures this has to be rescheduled to a longer appointment slot.
Sometimes its obvious to you that you need something out but we have to adjust our time and staffing for excisions so they have to be rebooked. People often also don't understand what's involved or what to expect. Costs , pros and cons of a procedure, possible side effects also need to be discussed. After this discussion many people decide they don't want anything done, especially for harmless lesions. This is also the same for cosmetic consultations.
